Wacky Wednesday

So I'm sorry it's been so long. I don't think I have any "followers", but it's still bad etiquette to ignore a blog for a week.

Nothing super exciting going on. I only ran 3 days last week, but got a 6-miler in on Sunday before church. I intended to do it on Saturday, but got struck with the horrible migraine bug, and couldn't seem to shake it enough to want to run.

Yesterday, I was supposed to go to soccer training (I also coach soccer), but it was cancelled due to weather. Luckily, my town got very little rain, so it was a GREAT day for a 4 mile (or so) run. It was hot and sticky just 'cause the rain threatened all afternoon, but I made it, and it felt GOOD!

I probably won't run today, but will certainly get one in on Thurs. and a short one on Fri so I can get 7 in on Saturday. That will be officially the longest I have ever run. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I'll have to get up early- it's supposed to be stormy and 92... YUCK!

That's about it. Between training for regionals (my team one States, so we are representing NC in the regional tournament), exam prep (exams start FRIDAY-- YAY!!) and running, my life is pretty full.

Enjoy your Hump day!

I did it...

... I went running despite the fact that everything inside of me was saying, no SCREAMING, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" Not only did I run 3 miles, but I did so also despite the fact that my back seized up about half way through AND a bird pooped on my head. Yep, boys and girls, that's what I said. A bird POOPED on my head! Awesome...

Hopefully will get a short run (or a short nap) in this afternoon before soccer tryouts start. Let's hope that I have the motivaiton to keep it up.

Not Feeling it

So...
I went to Ohio this weekend to visit my best friend from high school so that I could see her daughter be baptized, as I am the girl's Godmother.

I ran Thursday and then got a short, 2-3miler (not sure exactly as I forgot my watch) on Sunday.

And I SHOULD run today, but I am NOT feeling it. I need some motivation. If I had to decide right now (it's 10am), I would NOT go. I'm just tired, and a little sore, and just generally not interested in it today. I could give you some of my pretend excuses, but the honest truth is I'm just not feeling it. I REALLY want to be a lazy bump and sleep this afternoon after work.

What do you do to get over the hump on days like this?

RESULTS ARE IN!!

166/233; 15th in the age group (out of 23)
Watch time: 1:05:05
Chip time: 1:05:55
Chip time pace: 10:37 (not my favorite, but I kept saving up in anticipation of these "big hills" that never came... I'll work on this for next time)

Not too shabby. It DOES mean that I beat some people.

And if I was over 50, I would SLAY the age group with that time! I'm just sayin...

10K Positives and Negatives

Alright, so here's what I thought about the race:
Liked: -the volunteers at the water station- so bright and cheerie
-the food after the race- plenty of water, oranges, bananas, strawberries, pretzels...
-the course- not very hilly, fairly easy

Did not like:- the shirts- yes, they were tech shirts, but they were WAY too tight and I even got a size up due to the "women's shirts run small" recommendation
-the water and everything for after the race was up a steep ass hill from the finish line... do you WANT me to be pissy at the end of the race?!?!?
-the last .2 or even .1 was FREAKIN STRAIGHT UP HILL I was cruising until the last minute... grr. Also, the water was served in these TINY plastic cups. I grew out of sippy cups when I was THREE- can I have an adult's sized please? I just ran over SIX FREAKIN MILES!
-the guys at the turn around points were TOTAL jerks. One of my friends who came to cheer said she heard him say "are you the last one, fat guy? Did you just see all the GIRLS that are beating you? Pick it up" - what an asshole!!
-no mile markers. No way to tell what my splits were. They said the people at the turn arounds and whatever would tell us how far along we were- they didn't (see bullet above)
-NO space for cheer-ers... The entire course was on a path or a greenway, with pretty much no room for people to cheer you on
-The race director at the beginning basically yelled at us and told us how hard the course was going to be, and then talked about how awesome his wife is and how we should thank her for volunteering at one of the water stops. Get over yourself and be a bit more cheery, please.
-The bathroom line was freaking RIDICULOUS! Not enough bathrooms for everyone to go before the race= some UNHAPPY runners (and woods that are full of bathroomers)

Overall, it wasn't a terrible race (despite the inordinate amount that I didn't like vs. the stuff I did). I would do the 10K again... I don't know that I would do the half, even if I was in half shape just 'cause the course is supposedly BRUTAL once you pass the 10K part (you have to go up and down "cemetary hill" TWICE).

Rest day was yesterday and I'm doing a 4-miler today. Hopefully the weather clears up a bit and the humidity clears out before then. It has been raining for like 36 hours straight at this point, but it's supposed to clear out before this afternoon. Hoping for a good faster-than-the-10K pace today... we'll see how it goes! :)

10K SUCCESS!! :)

So I am SUPER pumped because I FREAKIN ROCKED the 10K I was so stressed about!!
Race Recap:
Before the race, I got up at 5:30 (yes, AM) to get ready to run. TOY2 picked me up at around 5:50, and off she, her husband, and I went. I had a banana and an almond bar in the car, and filled my Nalgene. We got there, got our chip, went to the bathroom, and spent the remaining 30 minutes before she started her race chatting and stretching.

At 7:00, she and my other closest friend from work, TOY3, began their half marathons. I'm not quite there, but I'm super up for the challenge to get training soon.

After they left, my friend, Mrs. AD, and I stood around, sort of stretching, but mostly taking in all the people around us.

Finally, at 7:15, it was time to race. The race director warned us that we had to run "All the way up hill to the airport overlook- You're welcome" and that it was a "challenging course", so I was fairly nervous. Below are the mile recaps, though they are just guesses, as there were NO mile markers anywhere during the race.

Mile 1:
I felt pretty good to start, I felt stretched and energized, and ready to run. Not even a mile into it (it seemed), we had a water stop. I had vowed to stop and drink when I got to any water stop, but it seemed rather soon- I took a water, and drank it, but did not stop.

Mile 2:
Still feeling good, and the hills I was expecting were no where to be found. I thought I should still go slow, though, because I was ready to run way up hill at some point. At about 2.5, we turned around at the "overlook". I still didn't see any major uphill climb, but I was totally ready to turn around. TOY3's daughter and wife were there, though and totally cheered me on. It was certainly the motivation I needed to stay focused and keep running.

Mile 3:
At about mile 3.5 (maybe around the 4 mark), we had the same water stop again. I still was really feeling too good to stop, so I drank some water and kept trucking.

Mile 4:
This was in a greenway area that I was actually quite familiar with. I was getting tired, but not pooped to the point that I needed to quit running. This was kinda strange to me, as I expected to want to die the last two miles of the run, but I was still going, and in fact encouraging those around me not to give up and to keep on running.

Mile 5:
I was starting to really tire by mile 5. Since there were no mile markers, I kept anticipating the end, and it didn't want to come. I felt okay, but was ready for the race to be over.

Mile 6 (the last .2):
This was a cruel cruel joke played on us by the people who planned the race. This stupid last .2 was absolutely UPHILL! And not just with an incline a freaking HUGE HILL! All I wanted to do was stop, and I'm sure that my "running" pace was not much faster than I could have walked, but was DETERMINED not to stop running. Finally, the last little bit was downhill, and I sprinted for all I had left.

Not sure what my chip time was, but my watch said I finished in 1:05. Not too shabby, considering... That's all I'll bore you with for now. Tomorrow, I'll list out the positives and negatives from the day. If you made it this far reading this post- thanks!! :)

Glorious Rest Day

So yesterday was a rest day. A day for my muscles to repair and strengthen so I can run farther and faster.

It's also a day that I can make up the missing sleep that I miss when I get up at 5:30 every morning to be ready for school. Yes, ladies and gents, I said FIVE THIRTY!!! I have to report to work no later than 6:55. Yes, I realize that that number, that correlates with work, starts with a SIX. It's brutally early- for the students, the teachers, the janitors, the administrators, and everyone else involved.

So yesterday, I chose to nap on my rest day and slept from 4-6. It was very nice.

Today is an easy 2(ish) so that I can be ready for my race on Sunday. I will take another rest day tomorrow so that I'm fully ready to run like the wind (10 minute or so miles :)) and race that 10K. After my run, I get to go out to eat with some family. My cousin graduates from NCState on Saturday, and we're celebrating by eating at one of his favorite restaurants. It's actually better that we celebrate his graduation on Friday instead of Saturday because I can really eat/drink what I want and stay out later than I will want to on Saturday (because of my race on Sunday).

Enough rambling for today. I will give a full race update by Monday at the latest!
